Why are my iPhone photos in HEIC format?

iOS 11+ defaults to HEIC because it's roughly half the size of JPEG. Most non-Apple software needs HEIC converted to JPG.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding uses libheif compiled to WebAssembly running in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.

Choose PNG for lossless output. JPG at quality 90+ is visually indistinguishable for most photos.
