Compress a PDF to Fit an Upload Limit

How it works — 100% in your browser, no upload
Quick answer: pick the size limit the portal shows (for example 1 MB), drop your PDF and press Compress. FileSlim runs stronger passes until the file fits, all inside your browser — your document is never sent anywhere.

Size limit of your portal

Drop the PDF that is too large

Compressed locally — the document never leaves your device.

How to compress a PDF for an upload portal

  1. Check the limit. Read the maximum file size the form or portal allows.
  2. Pick the target. Choose the matching button: 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB.
  3. Add your PDF. Drop the document onto the drop zone.
  4. Compress and download. Press Compress, then download the file and upload it to the portal.

Before you upload

  • Upload limits vary by portal. Always check the exact number on the form itself.
  • Sending a copy of an ID? Mark it with Watermark PDF (for example "Copy for job application only").
  • Emailing it instead? Add a password with Protect PDF and share the password another way.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the portal say my PDF is too large?

Job, university and government portals set a maximum file size to keep their storage small. Scanned documents and phone photos saved as PDF are often several megabytes, well above those limits.

Will the text still be readable after compression?

Yes. Text and vector graphics are kept as they are; the size saving comes from re-encoding embedded images and removing unneeded data. Scanned pages get softer at very small targets like 100 KB.

What if the PDF cannot reach the target?

The tool keeps the smallest version it could make and tells you. Splitting the document into parts or removing pages you do not need usually solves it.

Is it safe for ID documents and contracts?

The file is processed only in your browser and is never uploaded to FileSlim. Nothing is stored after you close the tab.

Can I add a password before sending?

Yes — after compressing, use Protect PDF to add an AES-256 open password. Only do this if the recipient expects it; many portals reject password-protected files.
